Local contractor is latest to provide sponsorship for Tall Ships event and sail trainees

Lerwick Building Centre and Irvine Contractors have provided a much-needed financial boost to The Tall Ships Races 2011 – Lerwick and Sail Training Shetland with a £5,000 contribution.

Irvine Contractors/Lerwick Building CentreThe Tall Ship Races 2011 – Lerwick will benefit from £3,500 of the sponsorship whilst charitable organisation, Sail Training Shetland will receive £1,500 to help fund their trainee programme.

Leslie Irvine, Managing Director of Lerwick Building Centre and Irvine Contractors, said “The best thing for me about The Tall Ships Races, is that I feel it brings everyone in Shetland out for the event. I’m sure the 2011 event will be as memorable as the last.”

The Tall Ships Races 2011, presented by Szczecin, organised by Sail Training International starts in Waterford, Ireland on 30 June with vessels racing to Scotland, calling at Greenock and then taking the Cruise in Company leg to Shetland. Lerwick will then host the Ships for four fun-packed days before the start of Race Two, sailing to Stavanger in Norway.

Trainees from across Scotland will learn to sail and work on board one of the Tall Ships during the leg of the race that reaches Shetland on Thursday 21st July.

Fiona Dally, project manager for The Tall Ships Races 2011 – Lerwick, said: “We’re delighted to receive this very generous sponsorship from Lerwick Building Centre and Irvine Contractors. 

“Currently over 40 local sail trainees will be taking part in this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity whilst learning valuable life skills, and this contribution will go some way to ensuring Sail Training Shetland and The Tall Ships Races can give young people the best possible summer experience.”
